Before the 20th Century, the region around East Coast Road, Joo Chiat and Katong used to be filled with coconut plantations. This balmy atmosphere provided the perfect backdrop for the wealthy to have their weekend retreats. East Coast Road used to be a sandy road lined with coconut palm trees that ran along the ocean.

The blues and greens in the artwork are reflective of this ocean road. Later on, the area was developed into a residential suburb. The Peranakans - mostly English-Educated and middle class, chose to settle there.

Today, their legacy still lives on in the preserved shophouses and colonial bungalows that dot the area.
