ORIGINAL ARTWORKS

What are original artworks? How are original artworks created?
What is the difference between Deborah McKellar’s original artworks and prints?
What are silkscreens?

-1-
EXISTING ARTWORK OR NEW ARTWORK?

Firstly, will the artwork be based on an artwork that Deborah has created, or will it be an entirely new artwork?

To get an idea of Deborah’s artwork style and past/present artworks, please visit the “Portfolio” tab above.

Are there any particular artworks/colours/images/themes that you are drawn to? Take note of them, make a list!

If you would like a particular artwork in the portfolio and it has been sold, Deborah is able to recreate a similar piece. This would mean that she would be repainting the piece with the same dimensions, similar composition & similar colour palette. Please note that no two original artworks are ever identical but they would have a similar feel. Alternatively should you wish to ask for a few adjustments such as the canvas dimensions or the colour palette this can also be arranged.

If you would like a completely new artwork, you are most welcome to send us your requests and/or photographs, if any. Please note that accepting commissions is to the artist's discretion - there is a particular range of subject matter that suits Deborah’s artistic style, she will not be able to take on all topics.

-2-
DISCUSSION & PLANNING

The second step would be to arrange a studio visit! It is best to view Deborah’s artworks in person to experience the colours, textures and textiles. We’ve tried our best with the photography, but the artwork images on screen can never do the original artworks justice.
If you are living overseas, a video call (Zoom or WhatsApp) can also be arranged.

For a completely new artwork, Deborah can either work from her existing collection of silkscreens, do an on-site photoshoot, or work from your photographs, or from stock images.

Topics of discussion will include - artwork size, colours (which colours to use, and to avoid), elements/subjects/images, choosing fabrics or other surface techniques, timeframe or deadlines.
If you have a deadline (eg: a birthday or anniversary present), please do let us know.

Once the discussion is finalised, a 50% deposit is required before artwork production commences.

-3-
MOCKUP CREATION

A black and white computer mockup is created - this is just for layout purposes, to show where each element will be situated on the canvas.
All of the elements in the mockup will be shown to scale, in proportion to the artwork size.

-4-
ARTWORK CREATION

If there are new silkscreens to be created from drawings or photographs, they will be edited on the computer (Photoshop) and sent to the silkscreen factory. In some cases, new fabric or other textures will be sourced and purchased.

Below is an example of a computer mockup, the resulting artwork - “Evening Stroll”, and a real-life photo of the artwork on the client’s wall.
