Artwork Description
The main subject matter for this artwork is a large ship on the horizon called China Shipping Line. This was a photo that I took when this huge vessel sailed right past me and into the port of Singapore. I was excited to think about the origins of this ship and the link that Singapore historically has with China.
In my mind I reflect less on the political link and rather a more romanticised view of the beautiful porcelain patterns, Chinese ink drawings and artistic influences that came from China. With the majority of Singapore’s population being Chinese, this cultural heritage is clearly seen and felt whilst living on this cosmopolitan Island.
“China Shipping Line” is a part of a series of artworks looking at the ships of Singapore. Being one of the busiest ports in the world, this is a subject matter that is iconically Singapore.
In the waters of this artwork you will see blue & white porcelain patterns, this is a reminder that these are Southeast Asian waters.
Some of my earliest memories here in Singapore have to do with the astounding views of a sea filled with ships. At night when all the lights come on, they truly look like a city on the water.
The ships are a reminder that Singapore is a bustling international city constantly connected to other parts of the world. The ships come and go, reminding us of our own journey through life. From a distance these giant beauties are romanticised as they sail into the distance.
