Artwork Description

The story for this artwork developed around this antique object. I found this in a shop in Surrey , just outside of London. When I first saw it I wasn’t really sure what it was, but loved it anyway!I spoke to the lady in the store and found out it wasn’t a large pin cushion but actually a ladies footstool! I love the colours and the texture of the stitches.

In this artwork I’ve printed & painted in a rose with a cross stitch texture & then added actual cross stitch threads to make this artwork more textured and 3D. I’ve used this same palette of dusty pinks , earthy browns and sap greens through our the artwork.

The actual Shophouse is printed in an off-white. I find it really interesting the way the Shophouses here in Singapore are made up of a mix of architectural styles. Here you’ll see columns that are more European alongside Peranakan tiles. It’s for this reason that I thought it would be interesting to have a combination of English roses together with South East Asian orchids. Singapore has such a mix of cultures , so I’ve represented this with a mix of flowers. In the top left hand corner I’ve taken the tile motif, from the Shophouse & enlarged it. The pale olive green here is embossed with a layer of velvet fibres. Next to this I’ve used a sunny gold ink. The little sunbirds have also been painted with sunny yellows. Finally the old fountain pen writing here adds to the romantic feel of this piece.

For local orders, delivery and installation is complimentary.

For international orders, canvas artworks will be taken off the frame and delivered rolled up in a sturdy cardboard tube. Framing instructions will be included, which can be taken to any framer.
