Artwork Description
The title for this artwork is ‘Golden Emperor’, I wanted to capture a Romanised interpretation of classic Chinese style. When I was 10 years old I visited The Forbidden City, in Beijing, where the last Emperor had lived. I remember walking through the different courtyards and the palace and being amazed by what I saw. I fell in love with intricate architectural details. Gold and red were predominating colours, seen all over the Forbidden City, so I felt that these were the colours that I wanted to use in a bold way in this artwork. I was also inspired by Saint Laurent’s design for a perfume bottle called ‘Opium,’ this too is a romanticised idea of the Chinese style. The rich red of the bottle inspired the colour used for the shophouse and the ceramic bamboo. Motifs such as hanging lanterns, dragons, phoenix and bamboo remind me of the typical imagery that you will find in the Chinese festivals here in Singapore. Much of Singapore’s culture has a very strong ancestral link to China, and it is for this reason that I wanted to capture Chinese style this in this piece. So, if you are looking for a bold, opulent artwork with a romantic Chinese theme, then this is the piece for your interior space.
The photograph used in this artwork of a row of well-preserved Peranakan Shophouses was taken at Koon Seng Road, Joo Chiat, Singapore.
