Artwork Description

Mandarin Rose is a very vibrant artwork. The inspiration for this piece began with some beautiful Chinoiserie fabric that I found in London. When I was 19, I went on my first trip to the UK. At the top of my must do list was a visit to Trisha Guild’s fabric shop. Designer Guild is known for her rich colours which can clearly be seen in this artwork.

The name Mandarin Rose refers to the flowers, which are shown in full bloom. Mandarin has a double meaning, a nod to the Chinese tone of the artwork as well as the shade of orange used in the Shophouse. The Chinoiserie patterns are screen printed in repeat, creating a wallpaper like effect. You can see them printed here using a print technique called marbling. Basically, different shades of blue ink are pulled through the silk screen to create this tonal effect. This lantern here also shows a chinoiserie scene. For this, a special technique called flocking was used, which gives this lantern a velvety texture. The porcelain jar is also shown in blue & white, here I’ve used loose line work which adds to the energy and freedom of this artwork.

Overall, this piece has a positive feeling just like the warmth that a family lunch in the garden on a beautiful Summers day would bring.
