Artwork Description
In the past, when Singapore used to be a Malay fishing settlement, many “Kampong” could be found. The term “Kampong” refers to traditional villages, especially those of indigenous people. A Kampong lifestyle was simple and laidback. There was a sense of community and neighbours looked out for each other - the “Kampong Spirit”. In the present day, almost all of the Kampung have been demolished and redeveloped, save for one last surviving Kampong in the North-East - Kampong Lorong Buangkok.
The photograph used in this artwork of a row of well-preserved Peranakan Shophouses was taken at Koon Seng Road, Joo Chiat, Singapore.
