Artwork Description
Just around the corner the famous Koon Seng Road can be found. This particular street is the most photographed street in all of Singapore! It is here that you will find a whole row of Singapore’s iconic, colourful, heritage homes. They are the epitome of the typical Peranakan style housing. The colours or the homes remind me of the peranakan porcelain, made of pink, blue, yellow & orange.
Peranakan is a word that means ‘ locally born’. Peranakan is a blend of Chinese & Malay culture. This particular group of people are known and the Straits Chinese, a unique culture was formed when these two cultures came together. Today Peranakans are known for their uniquely brightly coloured porcelain, delicious food and of course their colourful Shophouses.
In the sky you will see lace patterns, this too is a nod to the Peranakan culture, which is famously found in this East Coast area of Singapore. Peranakan ladies, known as Nyonya, wear a traditional blouse-dress called a kebaya, this is made of a delicate lace. In the right-hand corner here I’ve used a motif taken from a beaded slipper. There is a large amount of gold leaf in the sky which is reflective of the elaborate golden trimmings found on Peranakan porcelain.
Lanterns dance across the golden-yellow sky as a man on a bike slowly rides into the distance.
